From 2005, the phenomena of convergence and Web 2.0, enabled more cyber-activity, from more places, more often. This convenience is a huge part of the attaction of ICT for young people – it plays a key role in producing space from family and parents so they can differentiate and explore who they are.With technology continuing to evolve parents sometimes do not understand or are unable to support their kids to be safe in cyberspace.
On the flip side, others are so scared by the challenges they restrict technology access hoping this will keep their kids safe. However, we know this only serves to drive kids online behaviour underground – preventing parents from supporting kids to be safe. So what should parents do? How can we support parents to support their kids?
This session questions whether parents need specific technology skills to help their children manage online challenges as well as explores the ways we can work together to support parents to be confident about cyberspace and digital citizenship. Is it about engaging youth to teach their parents or is it about engaging whānau and family? Should parents attend ‘ante-teenage’ classes?

Parents need to take an interest in the activity their children are doing online, then understand it. There are plenty of resources online where parents can learn about these technologies.
They build on that by discussing with their child what they like doing online, and finding out whether they practice digital citizenship.
Parents should also have some form of monitoring, whether it be physical or software, to discover what they are actually doing in practice.
Parents should take the opportunity where available, to attend internet safety presentations presented through schools. We (WebSafety NZ Limited) present these to parents in Christchurch.

While the today's technological development gives an advantage with regards to faster communication and acquiring of information, it's also something that parents should be worried of. We may have limited knowledge with regards to cyber use, but we can definitely learn how it operates in order to ensure that our kids are not expose to the disadvantages of technology.
From the start, it wouldn't hurt to impose some rules regarding the use of the internet and the cellphone, reminding them of being responsible online users and explain the harms of the cyber world. Always make sure to monitor your kid's online activities by placing the computer in the living room area or somewhere you can just pass by to have a look at what they're doing. Let's not limit ourselves to what we know, educating ourselves to level with our kid's interest will definitely help us parents to relate to them with understanding and at the same time giving them the guidance that they need.
